Parks Canada vs Roam Transit for Lake Louise and Moraine Lake

In the years that I’ve been helping people find the best way to visit Moraine Lake, I’ve realized that there’s so much confusion between Parks Canada Shuttles and Roam Transit. Perhaps because they are somewhat intertwined, but there are some key differences between them that can affect your visit to Moraine Lake in Banff, if you don’t plan accordingly.

I’ll explain all the differences between Parks Canada vs Roam Transit for Moraine Lake and Lake Louise that will help in your decision process for determining which one is the best option for visiting these two iconic Banff lakes on your trip.

Moraine Lake Shuttle at Park and Ride (Lake Louise Ski Resort)

This post contains compensated links.

If you’re just looking for a quick answer, here’s how you can choose:

  • Staying in Banff (or visiting Banff without a car): Roam Transit is usually the most practical starting point because it leaves from Banff, not the Lake Louise Park and Ride.
  • You have a car and you want the simplest “both lakes” day: Parks Canada shuttles offer the most flexibility for time and your reservation includes the Lake Connector between lakes.
  • You want sunrise at Moraine Lake: that is a separate conversation. Your best bet is the Parks Canada Alpine Start shuttle or a commercial sunrise shuttle, like Moraine Lake Bus Company.

As a local, I help travellers like you understand your options for shuttles to these two iconic Banff Lakes. Along with an explanation of all you options, I’ll personally give you recommendations for the best shuttle options for your trip.

Parks Canada Shuttle to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise

Let’s start with Parks Canada Shuttles, as this is the one that most people are referring to when they say “Moraine Lake Shuttle”.

Parks Canada shuttles (regular daytime service) leave from and return to the Lake Louise Park and Ride at Lake Louise Ski Resort (1 Whitehorn Road). Parking at the Park and Ride is free.

When you make your reservation, you only need to choose which lake to go to first and the 1 hour time slot you want to leave the Park and Ride at.

Arrive at the parking lot at the Lake Louise Ski Resort, check in with the Parks Canada kiosk, then get in line for the next shuttle. This needs to be done within that 1 hour time slot that you booked.

Moraine Lake Shuttle at Park and Ride

Enjoy your time at the first lake. Once done, return to the parking lot to get in line for the Lake Connector shuttle (included with your shuttle reservation). When you are ready to head back to the Park and Ride, just get in line for the next shuttle returning to the Lake Louise Ski Resort (also included). The line-ups are well marked in the parking lots!

Important: Parks Canada is very clear that your shuttle trip must begin at the Park and Ride (unless you are on Alpine Start). If you try to park at Lake Louise Lakeshore and hop on the Lake Connector shuttle, you will not be permitted. The only exceptions to this are for people who are staying at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Paradise Lodge and Bungalows. For those people, they can walk to the lakeshore parking lot, show reservation and proof of lodging to use the Lake Connector without first checking in at Lake Louise Ski Resort.

Parks Canada Reservations for 2026

  • 40% of tickets are released on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at 8 am MDT.
  • The other 60% are released at 8 am MDT on a 48 hour rolling basis throughout the season.

Parks Canada does allow changes to shuttle reservations, if dates/times are available.

Roam Transit to Lake Louise & Moraine Lake

Roam Transit (the public bus system here in the Bow Valley) runs Route 8X that can be used for visiting either just Lake Louise or both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. If you’re planning to use Roam Transit to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise in the same day, you’ll need the Reservable Super Pass and you must start your trip in Banff.

Roam’s Route 8X (Lake Louise Express) departs from the Banff High School Transit Hub, and stops at Lake Louise Village and Lake Louise Lakeshore.

The Banff High School Transit Hub on Banff Avenue in downtown Banff.

Local Tip

There is no parking at the Banff High School, so if your hotel isn’t walkable to the Banff High School Transit Hub use other parking options like the Banff Train Station and walk over.

For summer 2026, Roam has two reservation types: Super Pass for Banff, Lake Louise, and Moraine Lake, and One-Way/Return Reservations for Banff and Lake Louise only. For winter and spring, reservations are only for Lake Louise and never include Moraine Lake.

The Reservable Super Pass is available June 1 to October 12, 2026 only. It is Roam’s option for people who want to visit both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake without driving. The pass includes a round-trip Route 8X reservation between Banff and Lake Louise Lakeshore and a round-trip ride on Parks Canada’s Lake Connector Shuttle to Moraine Lake.

Local Tip

Roam reservations are only available on Route 8X between Banff and Lake Louise. No other Roam routes offer reservations.

Similar to Parks Canada, you must begin your trip in Banff on Roam 8X. If you are starting in Lake Louise, staying in Lake Louise, or driving to Lake Louise Lakeshore, you cannot use the Reservable Super Pass to access Moraine Lake.

Also, you must use the Lake Connector shuttle to get to Moraine Lake and then back to Lake Louise to return to Banff using Roam Route 8X.

The Super Pass costs $30 for adults and $15 for seniors and youth. Children 12 and under are free, but still need a reservation. You must book your reservable Super Pass tickets online in advance. Arrive 20 minutes early with your full group. If you miss your departure, you may be able to use the ticket later that day, but you may have to wait up to 2 hours.

You can still ride Route 8X without a reservation because about 40% of seats are kept for walk-up riders. However, in summer, the wait can be up to 2 hours, your entire group must be present before joining the line, and this does not provide access to Moraine Lake.

For both the Reservable Super Pass and One-Way/Return Reservations, reservations open in stages for summer 2026:

  • June travel opens April 23 at 9 a.m. MT
  • July travel opens May 25 at 9 a.m. MT
  • August travel opens June 22 at 9 a.m. MT
  • September to October 12 travel opens July 27 at 9 a.m. MT

For 2026, Roam also offers a reservable option just for Lake Louise. This one-way or round-trip 8X reservation works for Banff to Lake Louise Village or Lake Louise Lakeshore, but it does not include Moraine Lake. This reservable option is available from June 1 to October 12, 2026 and is for travelers who only need transportation between Banff and Lake Louise.

Local Tip

Roam Reservable Super Passes are often sold out for most of the summer, so book early.

Can you change or cancel your Roam Transit reservations? Bookings can be modified up to 2 hours before departure, but only if space is available. For cancellations, Roam allows refunds more than 48 hours before departure, but applies a 25% cancellation fee, and the $3 booking fee is never refunded. Within 48 hours of departure, there are no refunds.

All Roam buses are wheelchair accessible. Pets are allowed if they are properly crated, and service dogs are always welcome. Bikes can go on the exterior rack, but only up to 3 bikes per bus on a first come, first served basis. Strollers are allowed, but must be folded if needed. Bear spray is permitted only if it is sealed and stored inside a bag.

Roam’s one-way 8X fare is $12.50 adult, $6.25 youth/senior, and children 12 and under are free (but still need a reservation on reservable services).

How to visit both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake using Parks Canada (step by step)

Parks Canada is the easiest option for visiting Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in the same day, if you have a car. Here’s how it works:

  1. Book your Parks Canada shuttle reservation and choose your first lake (Lake Louise Lakeshore or Moraine Lake).
  2. Drive to the Lake Louise Park and Ride at Lake Louise Ski Resort and check in during your departure window.
  3. Ride to your first lake.
  4. When you are ready to switch lakes, take the Lake Connector (first come, first served, no specific time booking).
  5. At the end of the day, take the shuttle back to the Park and Ride from either lake. Your reservation includes the return shuttle.

Local Tip

There is no public bus service to the Lake Louise Park and Ride at the Lake Louise Ski Resort. If your plan involves the Park and Ride lot, you need a car to get there.

How to visit both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake using Roam Transit Route 8X (step by step)

This is the best plan if you are staying in Banff and do not have a car (or would prefer not to drive). Here’s how it works:

  1. Book Reservable Super Pass for Roam Route 8X from Banff High School Transit Hub to Lake Louise Lakeshore.
  2. Show up early (Roam recommends 20 minutes before departure for reservable trips).
  3. To Get to Moraine Lake, your Roam Transit Reservable Super Pass includes access to Parks Canada’s Lake Connector.
  4. Take the Lake Connector from Lake Louise Lakeshore to Moraine Lake.
  5. Take the Lake Connector BACK to Lake Louise from Moraine Lake in time to catch your Roam bus back to Banff.
  6. Ride Roam 8X back to Banff on your reserved return.

Sunrise at Moraine Lake with Parks Canada

Parks Canada Alpine Start Shuttle

Parks Canada offers Alpine Start departures at 4 am and 5 am between Lake Louise Lakeshore and Moraine Lake. Alpine Start boards at Lake Louise Lakeshore, not the Park and Ride, and requires paid parking at lakeshore.

Alpine Start riders return to their vehicle later via the Lake Connector, which runs every 30 minutes between 7 am and 7 pm.

Sunrise at Moraine Lake with Roam Transit

Roam is a great “no car” solution for getting to Lake Louise and connecting to Moraine Lake during the day, but it is not designed as a Moraine Lake sunrise system. The earliest Lake Connector runs at 7am and even late September, when sunrise is at 7:40am this wouldn’t be reliable enough to ensure you get to fully enjoy sunrise.

If sunrise is the whole point of your day, Parks Canada Alpine Start or a commercial sunrise shuttle is usually the realistic choice. Similarly, Alpine Start isn’t a great option after mid-September. Even with the 5am shuttle you’d need to wait 1.5-2 hours for sunrise at 7:30am. We recommend using Moraine Lake Bus Company for sunrise.

Getting to Lake Louise and Moraine Lake Without a Car

If you are staying in Banff or Canmore without a car, you can use Roam Transit to visit both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake without a car if you get the reservable super pass.

If you are staying in Canmore without a car, use Roam Route 3 to get to Banff in time for your reservation time on Roam Route 8X to Lake Louise lakeshore.

A commercial shuttle operator is also a good option from Canmore or Banff. We recommend Via Via Moraine or Canmore Travel.

Parks Canada vs Roam Transit FAQs

Can I use Roam Transit to go to Moraine Lake directly?

No, you must use Roam Route 8X plus the Lake Connector Shuttle. In the past Roam Transit Route 10 would go to Moraine Lake directly, but this route will not run in 2026.

What happens if I miss the last shuttle back?

Parks Canada is blunt about it: if you miss your return transportation, you are responsible for securing your own transportation back and Moraine Lake has no cell service.

Can I drive to Lake Louise and shuttle to Moraine Lake?

You can still attempt Lake Louise Lakeshore parking, but the lot is typically full before sunrise in summer. Also, you can not take the Lake Connector shuttle from Lake Louise Lakeshore if you haven’t previously checked-in at the Lake Louise Ski Resort Park and Ride. Two exceptions to this rule are if you are staying at the Chateau Lake Louise or Paradise Lodge & Bungalows, then with proof of lodging and your shuttle reservation, you can use the Lake Connector without first checking in at the Park and Ride.

Can I bring my dog?

Parks Canada allows certified assistance animals, and only small crated pets that fit on your lap. Roam allows pets if appropriately crated, and service dogs are welcome.

Is Roam or Parks Canada better for accessibility?

Roam buses are fully accessible. Parks Canada shuttles are not accessible. If you have  an accessible parking placard you may still drive to Moraine Lake if parking is available.
