Does Banff Have an Airport?

With over 4 million visitors a year, Banff National Park is Canada’s most visited national park. But, despite its popularity, Banff does not have its own commercial airport. As we’ll discuss in the next section, the closest airport to Banff is in Calgary, Alberta (YYC). If you are looking for flights to Banff, you are almost always looking flights to Calgary.

Banff Airstrip

Once you are in the national park, you will probably notice that Banff actually does have an airstrip, which can be easily seen from the Trans-Canada Highway. You can spot it heading west just past the junction between the Town of Banff and the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive. This very basic grass airstrip exists exclusively for emergency and diversionary landings, and never for normal arrivals or departures.

Local Tip: If you are interested in spotting Banff wildlife, scan the Banff airstrip each time you drive by as the open field is a common place to see large herds of elk.

The 4 Closest Airports to Banff National Park

In this section, I will cover the four most common airports which travellers use to fly into Banff. If Calgary flights are expensive, the next most common gateways are Edmonton (YEG) or Vancouver (YVR).

1) Calgary International Airport (YYC) – The Closest Airport to Banff National Park

The closest airport to Banff National Park is in Calgary, Alberta, Canada’s fourth largest city. Home of the world-famous Calgary Stampede, the 90-minute drive from Calgary to Banff is highly enjoyable. You’ll begin your drive through flat farmland, but the terrain soon transitions to foothills. Soon enough the Canadian Rocky Mountains can be seen in the distance, adding a sense of anticipation and excitement as you get closer and closer.

2) Edmonton International Airport (YEG) – 3.75 hour drive

250 km (155 miles) north of Calgary, Edmonton is Alberta’s second biggest city and the provincial capital. As the second closest airport to Banff, you stand a better chance of finding a deal on your flights in Edmonton vs. Calgary.

If you are driving directly from the Edmonton International Airport to Banff, your journey begins with a pretty boring 140 minute drive straight south on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway (AB-2) until you reach the northeast Calgary Ring Road. From here, you have essentially the same drive to Banff as you would from the Calgary Airport (which is also in NE Calgary).

There is another excellent reason to fly into Edmonton; it’s the gateway to Jasper National Park. If you are unfamiliar with it, Jasper is another national park in the Canadian Rockies, immediately north of Banff National Park. Jasper is considered more wild and less touristy than Banff, which is a draw for many people.

A very common Canadian Rockies itinerary is to visit both Banff National Park and Jasper National Park in the same trip. They are connected via the Icefields Parkway, which is considered by many as one of the most beautiful drives in the world. Getting to Banff via Edmonton and Jasper extends the total driving time to approximately 7.5 hours.

3) Kelowna International Airport (YLW) – 5.5 hour drive

Known for its vineyards, orchards and lakes, Kelowna, BC is a beautiful resort town in British Columbia, west of Banff National Park. The 480 km (300 mile) drive from Kelowna, British Columbia to Banff is very beautiful as the majority of the drive is mountainous. Depending on your route, you’ll enjoy scenery from the through the Coast Mountains, Columbia Mountains and of course, the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Travellers driving from Kelowna to Banff National Park may drive through Sinclair Canyon.

4) Vancouver International Airport (YVR) – 10 hour drive

Despite being the furthest Canadian airport on this list to Banff National Park, Vancouver is a very popular starting point for trips to Banff National Park. Why? Because Vancouver is widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. With its enviable location in-between sea and mountains, Vancouver is an amazing city and one of my favorite places in Canada.

The most direct driving route from Vancouver to Banff is via the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5). The Coquihalla is a much faster, albeit less scenic route than the Trans-Canada Highway out of Vancouver.

The scenery as you leave Vancouver transitions from wet coastal forest to high alpine conditions pretty quickly. Once you hit Kamloops, you are back on the Trans-Canada Highway and the terrain transitions to rolling hills and lakes.

Not far beyond Kamloops, you’ll hit Salmon Arm. From this point, the drive becomes the same beautiful mountain drive described above in the Kelowna section.

I have driven between Banff and Vancouver many times in my life, and it’s one of the most enjoyable road trips you can take.

Are There any US Airports Close to Banff?

The closest major US airport to Banff is in Spokane, Washington. The Spokane International Airport (GEG) is approximately 6.75 hours from the Town of Banff. I have never driven this leg, but given it passes through Sandpoint, Idaho and the Canadian Columbia Valley, it must be a beautiful drive.

Smaller, regional American airports which are also close to Banff include Kalispell, Montana (5.5 hours), Great Falls, MT (6.25 hours) and Missoula, MT (7.5 hours).

For most trips to Banff National Park, keep it simple and fly into Calgary International Airport (YYC). It’s the closest airport to Banff, it gives you the easiest travel day, and it keeps your itinerary flexible once you arrive.

If you’re seeing big price differences, consider flying into Edmonton (YEG), Kelowna (YLW), or Vancouver (YVR), but always weigh the extra drive time against how many days you actually have in the mountains.
