While the Town of Banff and nearby Canmore are the two most popular places to stay when visiting Banff National Park, they aren’t the only places to stay. There are plenty of Banff accommodation alternatives, from small mountain hamlets like Dead Man’s Flats and Harvie Heights to larger communities such as Golden, BC or Calgary, AB.

Why You Might Stay Outside the Town of Banff

The Town of Banff is a beautiful place to stay, but it’s not the only option for visiting Banff National Park. In fact, choosing one of the many Banff accommodation alternatives can make sense for several reasons.

For some travelers, who are traveling to Banff on a budget, it’s about finding more affordable places to stay near Banff, especially during the busy summer season when in-town prices are at their peak. Others prefer quieter bases with fewer crowds, or towns that offer more space, parking, or condo-style vacation rentals.

Ideally located between Lake Louise and Banff, Johnston Canyon is a great place to stay

Staying outside Banff can also give you easier access to other nearby destinations, whether that’s hiking in Kananaskis Country, exploring Yoho National Park’s Emerald Lake and Takakkaw Falls, or making day trips along the Icefields Parkway.

A Complete List of Banff Accomodation Alternatives

Here’s a look at all of your Banff accommodation alternatives from west to east, starting in Golden, BC and ending in Calgary, AB. Each of these alternatives to staying in the Town of Banff offers its own mix of pros and cons, from price and amenities to location and scenery. Whether you’re looking for the closest base to Lake Louise, a quiet mountain retreat, or a budget-friendly option with easy highway access, there’s something here to fit every style of trip.

Golden, British Columbia

Distance to the Town of Banff: 139 km / 86 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 82 km / 51 miles (MAP)

Golden is the farthest option on this list of Banff accommodation alternatives, sitting about 1 hour and 30 minutes west of the Town of Banff. While Golden is pretty far from the Town of Banff, it can be a great base for exploring the top sites in Yoho National Park, including Wapta Falls and the Natural Bridge, as well as the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake areas.

You’ll find a mix of budget motels, vacation rentals, and lodge-style hotels here, often at more affordable rates than resort towns closer to Banff. Golden works as one of the Banff accommodation alternatives if you’re happy to focus on Yoho and the western side of Banff National Park, and you don’t mind a longer drive for the rest of your sightseeing. Field, BC

Distance to the Town of Banff: 83 km / 52 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 27 km / 17 miles (MAP)

Just 20 minutes west of Lake Louise, Field is a tiny community in the heart of Yoho National Park. While it has very limited amenities, just a couple of small restaurants and no large hotels, it offers unbeatable proximity to top Yoho attractions like Takakkaw Falls and Emerald Lake. It’s also a short drive to the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake area.

Takakkaw Falls, Yoho National Park

Accommodation in Field is mostly small inns, B&Bs, and vacation rentals, often run by local residents. Field can be one of the best Banff accommodation alternatives if you want to base yourself close to both Yoho and the western edge of Banff National Park, and don’t mind driving farther for Banff townsite activities. You won’t find Field accommodations on Expedia, etc., so if you are interested try an internet search to discover the small guesthouses.

Lake Louise, Alberta

Distance to the Town of Banff: 57 km / 35 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 0 km / 0 miles (MAP)

Lake Louise is one of the most famous spots in Banff National Park, but it’s a ways from the Town of Banff, and staying here has its pros and cons. On the plus side, you’ll be right at the doorstep of two of the park’s most iconic locations: Lake Louise itself and Moraine Lake. You’ll also have quick access to hiking trails like Lake Agnes, Plain of Six Glaciers, and Fairview Lookout.

Accommodation options here range from luxury hotels like the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise to a small selection of inns, hostels, and vacation rentals. While room prices in Lake Louise are among the highest of all Banff accommodation alternatives, the location can’t be beat if you want to maximize time at the lakes and avoid early-morning drives from farther away.

Castle Junction, Alberta

Distance to the Town of Banff: 33 km / 21 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 27 km / 17 miles (MAP)

Castle Junction is a tiny cluster of accommodations and services located roughly halfway between the Town of Banff and Lake Louise. Its location is one of its biggest advantages with easy access to both areas, plus you’ll be just minutes from the Johnston Canyon trailhead on the Bow Valley Parkway. (We especially loved our stay at the Johnston Canyon Lodge & Bungalows).

Accommodation here is limited, but there’s some amazing cabins to rent here. While there are few amenities beyond a gas station and café, Castle Junction can be a great choice among Banff accommodation alternatives if you want a quiet base with quick access to some of the park’s most popular sights in both directions.

Harvie Heights, Alberta

Distance to the Town of Banff: 24 km / 15 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 79 km / 49 miles (MAP)

Harvie Heights is a tiny community tucked right outside the gates of Banff National Park, just a couple of minutes from Canmore and about 20 minutes from the Town of Banff. Its unbeatable location makes it one of the most convenient Banff accommodation alternatives, especially if you want quick access to both Banff and Canmore.

Accommodation here is almost entirely vacation rentals and condo-style units, with no real shops or restaurants in the immediate area. Harvie Heights can be a good choice if you want to be as close as possible to the park entrance while still enjoying lower prices than staying inside the Town of Banff.

Canmore, Alberta

Distance to the Town of Banff: 25 km / 15 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 80 km / 50 miles (MAP)

Just 15 minutes from the Town of Banff, Canmore is the most popular alternative base for visiting Banff National Park. This lively mountain town offers a huge range of accommodation, from budget hotels and hostels to luxury resorts and condo-style vacation rentals, making it one of the most versatile Banff accommodation alternatives.

Canmore is often less expensive, and also has more amenities than Banff itself, with an impressive selection of restaurants, shops, and services. Its location is ideal for exploring both Banff National Park and nearby Kananaskis Country, giving you easy access to hiking, biking, and other outdoor adventures without the same level of crowds you’ll find in Banff.

Dead Man’s Flats, Alberta

Distance to the Town of Banff: 33km / 21 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 88 km / 55 miles (MAP)

This small hamlet with an interesting name is just 5 minutes east of Canmore, meaning it’s only about 20 minutes from the gates of Banff National Park and just a little farther from the Town of Banff itself. Dead Man’s Flats is made up almost entirely of vacation rentals, offering plenty of condo-style accommodation options for travelers looking for Banff accommodation alternatives.

With very few amenities (no real shopping district and only a handful of restaurants) it’s a quiet base that works best for those who don’t mind driving to nearby towns for dining and activities.

Dead Man’s Flats is often even more affordable than Canmore, making it one of the best places to stay near Banff for budget-conscious visitors who still want easy access to the park. We stayed in a condo at Dead Man’s Flat’s while we shopped for a place to live in Canmore.

Exshaw, Alberta

Distance to the Town of Banff: 40 km / 25 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 95 km / 59 miles (MAP)

Although Exshaw sits in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, it’s not a traditional mountain resort town. This small, blue-collar community is home to the massive Lafarge cement plant and lacks the tourist infrastructure you’ll find in other Banff accommodation alternatives. It’s about a 15-minute drive to Canmore and roughly 30 minutes to the Town of Banff.

While you might come across the occasional well-priced Airbnb or vacation rental here, options are limited and amenities are minimal. Unless you’re traveling on a very tight budget and can’t find anything in the other nearby towns, Exshaw isn’t one of the best places to stay near Banff for most visitors.

Kananaskis Village

Distance to the Town of Banff: 80 km / 50 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 135 km / 84 miles (MAP)

Kananaskis Village is a small resort community about 60 minutes from the Town of Banff, set within Kananaskis Country, a vast network of provincial parks, recreation areas, and protected wilderness in Canadian Rockies. While it’s not inside Banff National Park, Kananaskis offers equally stunning mountain scenery and is known for its hiking, biking, golf, and winter sports.

Wedge Pond – just minutes from Kananaskis Village

Accommodation in Kananaskis Village is mostly upscale hotels and resorts (it recently hosted many world leaders when the G7 summit came to Canada), making it one of the more premium Banff accommodation alternatives.

You won’t find the variety of shops and restaurants that Banff or Canmore offer, but the peaceful setting and direct access to outdoor adventures make it a great choice if you want a quieter, less touristy alternative to the busier national park towns.

Cochrane, Alberta

Distance to the Town of Banff: 109 km / 68 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 164 km / 102 miles (MAP)

Heading further east, Cochrane is a charming small city set along the Bow River. It offers a mix of affordable vacation rentals and budget-friendly hotels, making it one of the more economical Banff accommodation alternatives. However, at roughly a 75-minute drive from the Town of Banff, it’s best suited for travelers who don’t mind a longer commute into the national park.

While you’ll find more amenities here than in smaller towns, including restaurants, shops, and services, Cochrane is not a resort destination. For most visitors, it’s worth considering only if you can’t find suitable places to stay near Banff or in the resort towns closer to the park.

Calgary, Alberta

Distance to the Town of Banff: 143 km / 89 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 199 km / 123 miles (MAP)

With a population of 1.4 million people, Calgary is the largest city in Alberta and the main gateway for most visitors flying in to explore Banff National Park. While it’s about a 90-minute drive to the Town of Banff, it offers the widest range of accommodation, from budget motels to luxury hotels.

As a Banff accommodation alternative, Calgary works best if you want big-city amenities, such as shopping, dining, entertainment, and don’t mind the longer daily drive into the mountains. It can also be a good option for early morning flights, late arrivals, or as a starting/ending point for a longer Alberta road trip.

Saskatchewan River Crossing (En-Route to Jasper)

Distance to the Town of Banff: 135 km / 84 miles (MAP)
Distance to Lake Louise: 99 km / 49 miles (MAP)
Distance to Town of Jasper: 153 km / 95 miles (MAP)

Saskatchewan River Crossing is not a typical Banff accommodation alternative. It’s a tiny service stop along the Icefields Parkway – one of the most scenic drives in the world. Situated roughly halfway between Lake Louise and Jasper, its location makes it a convenient overnight stop if you’re driving the parkway and want to break up the trip.

Nearby, you’ll find two of the area’s top attractions, Peyto Lake and the Athabasca Glacier, along with plenty of stunning mountain scenery.

Accommodation here is limited to a few options, with very few amenities beyond a gas station and small store. As a Banff accommodation alternative, it works best for travelers continuing north toward Jasper who want to maximize sightseeing along the Icefields Parkway without backtracking.

We recently stayed at the Columbia Icefield during a road trip along the Icefields Parkway. Check out our review of the Glacier View Lodge (coming soon).
